Soda Secrets

Just in case you were interseted in guzzling down a coke tonight. Here are a few facts to keep in mind before you reach for the soda.
Cola contains an ingredient called phosphoric acid. The pH of phosphoric acid is 2.8 and it can dissolve a nail in a few days. Mechanics actually use cola to dissolve corrosion from battery terminals. It can also do a great job dissolving rust stains from toilets and other similar items. When tankers transport the concentrate which is used to make soda, the truck has to display a "hazardous materials" card due to its highly corrosive properties.
Then they add sugar to the soda. A 12 ounce can of cola has 39 grams of sugar in it. Without blinking you just downed 39 grams of sugar. Almost 10 teaspoons of sugar! If you still drink soda and want to lose weight, cutting out soda should be your staring place. If you think diet soda is the answer, I am sorry to say-It just isn't. There was a study done at Purdue University where they examined 2 rats given yogurt. One group of rats were fed yogurt with sugar. The other group had yogurt containing saccharin. It didn't take long for the rats eating the saccharin to gain more weight than the other. They were eating significantly more than the others. The body temerature and metabolism of the saccharin eating rats went down.(Susan E. Swithers and Terry L. Davidson. 2008. A role for sweet taste: calorie predictive relations in energy regulation by rats. Behavioral Neuroscience. 122. 161-173). So switching to diet soda may be going from bad to worse.
Try water or seltzer, instead.
P.S. Juice is also full of sugar. They don't add white sugar, but the natural sugar is stripped from the fiber going straight into your blood stream. You see if you eat an apple for example, the sugar is bound to fiber in the apple, so it is slowly broken down, as opposed to juice which go's straight into your system. Juice is better than soda, but should still be limited. Even the nutrients that you should be getting in the juice, is not always there. Vitamin C for example is commonly displayed on orange juice cartons as a high source for Vit. C. However being a bit delicate, much of it is lost after sitting in the carton for months especially after being pasteurized. Heat can damage Vitamin C.
It may be too hard to off soda in one standing. You might want to slowly minimize how much you drink a day. Swap with club soda so you get the carbonated fizz feel with no calories, sugar or any other junk.
