The thyroid has the vital job of producing hormones such as T3 and T4, which  regulate the bodies metabolism, digestion, brain function, body temperature and energy levels. According to the ATA (the American Thyroid Association), it is estimated that 20 million americans suffer from thyroid disease. Most people don't realize that they have thyroid problems.Common symptoms of thyroid dysfunction are weight gain, being tired and sluggish, irregular body temperature and swelling in the neck..

Hypothyroidism means your thyroid is underacting. Someone with hypothyroidism will have slow body function, forgetfulness, muscle aches, weight gain, sensitivity to cold, dry skin, depression, weakness and low energy.

Hyperthyroidism is that the thyroid is overacting. This throws the body out of balance. Symptoms are weight loss, irritability, restlessness, anxiety, difficulty sleeping and increased expiration. 

Hashimotos is an autoimmune disease where the immune system is attacking the thyroid. Testing for thyroid antibodies, either TPO or TGA will ascertain if you have hashimoto's. 

Goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid usually as result of an iodine deficiency. 

Many people have food sensitivities such as gluten, casein and egg sensitivities. this results in the immune system attacking the thyroid gland. Avoiding sugar which is highly inflammatory can also help reduce thyroid problems. Selenium, zinc, iodine and potassium are important for thyroid health.
