There Are Many Methods of Detoxification
There are many methods of detoxification. A basic and simple way to aid your bodies detoxification is by drinking enough water. It is recommended to drink half your bodies weight in ounces of water. If you weigh 160 pounds that means you drink 80 ounces of water throughout the day. That is between nine to ten cups of water.
A simple tip is to fill a bottle at the onset of the day with the appropriate amount of water for the day. Use that as your water canteen throughout the day.
Now the quality of the water you drink is very important. We all know that tap water is often polluted. It contains often, chlorine, fluoride, pharmaceutical byproducts, heavy metals and other pollutants. You can check out an article in USA Today (March 8, 2009), they write that “a vast array of pharmaceuticals including antibiotics, anticonvulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans, an associated press investigation shows”.
More than 271 million pounds of pharmaceuticals are released into waterways in the US in a year.
The environmental working group (ewg.org) says that tap water across the US is contaminated with many industrial chemicals.
Many people turn to bottled water for refuge. The truth is though, that bottled water is often polluted, Also, the very fact that the water is sitting in the bottle for a while, especially in hot temperatures, cause plastic to leech out into the water.
The best option is to get a quality filter for either the house or at least the sink. You can decide if you want a reverse osmosis unit are a carbon multi-layer filter. Just make sure that your reverse osmosis filter adds minerals back into the water after it is cleaned. Many RO filters leave the water clean, but too clean. Without the necessary minerals in water you will not be properly hydrated and you will be mineral deficient.
Another thing to mention about detoxing is that many people are deficient in zinc even though they are intaking enough zinc. The reason for this is that they have heavy metal toxicity. If there is too much lead in the body it will replace zinc in the tissues. Heavy metal sources are silver amalgams (mercury), old structures and paint (lead), water supplies and conventional produce (arsenic, lead, manganese and others).
The reliable way to test your heavy metals levels is by a urine challenge test. Heavy metals don’t stay in your blood for too long. Instead, they are absorbed by the bones and tissues in your body. So, the way to measure your levels is by taking a chelating agent (EDTA or DMSA), and afterwards a urine sample is taken.
If your levels are high you may want to consider chelation therapy. You either take it orally or intravenously are both. There is also a way to take it topically.
There are also many foods that chelate and eliminate heavy metals. Cilantro can chelate heavy metals from the body. Dried cilantro does basically nothing. You need fresh cilantro.
Another food that is helpful with heavy metal detoxing is pectin. Pectin can be found in foods such as apples, citrus rind, bananas, carrots, cabbage, beets and okra.
Chlorella is a decent chelator. Methionine is a chelating agent which is found primarily in sesame seeds or other seeds. Fresh garlic has lots of NAC which increases glutathione and lessens the effects of heavy metals. Milk thistle is also a good liver detox enhancer.
Lets go through the different chelating methods.
Oral Chelation. Studies show that less than 10% of oral agents are absorbed into the body to actually remove heavy metals. It is better than nothing, but you are not getting the full value of the chelator. It is more useful for preventative, as it will attach itself to heavy metals in the food you are eating and prevent it from being absorbed into your body.
Topical Chelation. This is a very effective method. If you have difficulty with intravenous, this is definitely something to consider.
Intravenous Chelation. This is number one for effectiveness. 100% of the chelator will be utilized.
